Diabetes Battle

A new, high quality study which I cited in my Updates to Blood Sugar 101 blog found a steep increase in the incidence of retinopathy in people not diagnosed with diabetes whose A1cs were 5.5% or more. The study found that the predictive value of the A1c was much stronger than the predictive value of fasting blood sugars in the same population. At first glance this might be a very disturbing finding to those of us who find it difficult if not impossible to lower our A1cs below 5.5%

On an overnight trip to Dallas two weeks ago, I broke out in some rather ugly hives — again! My lips poofed up like I’d been slammed with a hockey puck, and my right eye went all ape-like. This lasted for several days.

There are so many great events around empowered patients and consumer-driven healthcare in the Fall. It also being soccer season, the kickoff of the school year, and time for nearly every existing Jewish holiday, I can’t possibly attend as many as I’d like to.

The journey of a thousand wishes starts here,in front of the refridgerator levator scapulaes elevating in silent harmony with the creak of the old metal door willing,willing,willing it to be so. Juice dribbles,spills,stains the floor but the alien quaffing it by the carton takes no notice of this fact it is not important,it can wait.

I frequently receive emails asking me about Gestational Diabetes (GD), which is the term used for diabetes that is diagnosed only after a woman, previously considered normal, displays abnormal glucose tolerance test results during pregnancy. Because obstetricians do a very good job of diagnosing and treating GD, I have not discussed it on my web site. If you are pregnant and have GD your doctors are almost certain to give you insulin to normalize your blood sugars

We tend to assume that the big companies making glucose monitoring products do nothing but sit around thinking about how they can sell more product. You can’t blame us; it sure looks that way from the outside.

Maybe that isn’t the most politically correct title for this post; I should grow up and say “women’s issues,” right?
